Will Smith may be returning for Independence Day 2 after all

After shooting down rumors that Will Smith would reprise his role as fighter pilot Steven Hiller ever since Independence Day 2 was first announced, Roland Emmerich finally admitted that he has an upcoming meeting with Smith scheduled to discuss the possibility of his return.

If Will Smith agrees to return, he will be joining his fellow original cast members Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Judd Hirsch (oddly enough, there's a rumor that Brent Spiner might make an appearance as well). In an interview during his promotional tour for White House Down Emmerich revealed he was not planning on having a main starring role for Will Smith, but he was open for a smaller appearance due to his being a major A-list star now.

In the past Will Smith has tried to stay away from sequels and/or prequels except for a select few such as Bad Boys 2 and the two Men in Black sequels. Lately he has also turned to more of the lower budget fare with upcoming projects such as heist flick Focus and a fantasy film based on a book titled A Winter's Tale. Personally, I hope he returns for Independence Day 2 even if it is a minor role; he was one of the many things I loved about the original Independence Day. I honestly don't think it will be the same without him. Hopefully soon we will get the official news that he has signed on to the sequel.

Independence Day 2 is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 3, 2015, but there is a possibility it will be pushed back until 2016.
