Lucas Black will return for Fast and Furious 7, 8 and 9
In a move that is not all that surprising given the popularity of the franchise, Universal Pictures announced that Lucas Black from Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift is returning for not one...not two...but THREE more Fast and Furious films. Yeah, you read that right. There is going to be three more Fast and Furious films on the way. As a fan of the franchise, I am personally extremely excited about this news.
Back in 2006 during the credits of Tokyo Drift, there was a scene that showed Lucas Black's character Sean Boswell gearing up for a race when all of a sudden Vin Diesel drives up next to him in a brief cameo. Since then fans have been anxiously waiting to see how Tokyo Drift fit into the timeline of the Fast and Furious franchise, as one of the characters who shows up alive and well in Fast and Furious 4, 5 & 6 dies in Tokyo Drift.
Black will be joining the original Fast and Furious gang headed by Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker), along with the additions of Tony Jaa, Kurt Russell, and Djimon Hounsou. James Wan is taking over the franchise from Justin Lin as director.
All I am hoping for is that the series continue with whatever it is that seems to have worked in revitalizing the franchise in the last three installments, and that it also has the senses to go out while on top instead of just milking it for no reason. I am highly confident that James Wan can help with this direction. I am equally excited about the cast additions of Russell, Jaa, and Hounsou.
Fast and Furious 7 will arrive in theaters July 11, 2014. No word yet on when Fast and Furious 8 will arrive, but it will most likely be in 2015.
UPDATE: Since Paul Walker's death due to a car accident, the release date for Fast and Furious 7 has been pushed back to April 10, 2015. Once Fast 7 is released, it is unclear what the future of the franchise will be.
