Djimon Hounsou joins Fast and Furious 7

An already impressive star-studded cast for Fast and Furious 7 has just been expanded as Djimon Hounsou is reported to be joining the adrenaline laced racing/heist franchise. There is no word yet on whether he will be aligned with Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew, or if he will be one of the antagonists siding with Jason Statham. Djimon already has several projects slated to make their way into theaters in 2014 - Seventh Son, Vatican Tapes, and will appear alongside Vin Diesel in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. He is also apparently voicing a character for the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon.

On top of this exciting bit of casting news, Vin Diesel revealed that Kurt Russell (who was previously reported to also join Fast and Furious 7) will not only have a role in the seventh film of the franchise, but will also be appearing in a planned Fast and Furious 8. It is still unclear what his role is in the franchise as well, though there has been some speculation that he could be playing either a law enforcement agent, a crimeboss, or some shadowy figure from either Toretto's or Brian O'Connor's (Paul Walker) past. I can't wait to see how both Kurt Russell and Djimon Hounsou are going to fit in the franchise. I am a huge fan of both actors.

I figured there was going to be an eighth film or possibly more in the Fast and Furious franchise when I heard there was going to be a seventh one. The franchise is too popular and seems to have finally found its formula for success to bow out now. Not only that, but there were too many cast additions to Fast and Furious 7 that it felt like it was getting to be a bit crowded. If the franchise can stick with what works and also continue to inject some originality into each of the installments then I would love to see it live on. Though I will say that I hope the franchise does go out on a high note and doesn't turn into a series that seems to just constantly pump out films for money (I'm looking at you Step Up series).

Anyways, we still have awhile before Fast and Furious 7 comes out, so it is too early to tell whether continuing on with the franchise is a good move or not. I'm willing to bet that it is a good move. The Fast and Furious franchise is one of my favorites, so I seriously hope I am right.

Fast and Furious 7 will race its way into theaters April 10, 2015.
